What is Fissure Sealant?
Fissure sealants are applied to prevent dental caries. It is a flowable filling material that is applied in the grooves of the back back teeth with high risk of caries. Fissure sealants are thin, transparent and white in color. Since they are flowable, they can be easily attached to the grooves of the tooth. They are applied on the tooth surface without any abrasion.
How Does Fissure Sealant Prevent Teeth Caries?
The toothbrush bristles cannot reach the recesses and pits on the chewing surfaces of the teeth while brushing. The nutrient residues on these recessed surfaces, called fissures, cause acid production by bacteria and the teeth begin to decay. Since the fissure sealants are flowable, they can move to the deepest place of the pits. By blocking these surfaces, they prevent the formation of caries by preventing the food residues and bacteria from sticking to the surfaces.
When and Where Should Fissure Sealants be applied?
Fissure sealant application is a preventive treatment applied to all milk and permanent molars that do not have any caries. The ideal period for fissure sealant application is; all children 4 years and older on all non-decaying milk teeth, for children of 5-7 years, when the first molar teeth appears and for children of 11-13 years when second molar teeth appears.
